A Super Swift Endorsement
Juszczyk's Designs and Jepsen's Beats
Background: We'll be shocked if we're the ones to break this news to you, but Taylor Swift has been attending Kansas City Chiefs games recently.
On January 13th, when the Chiefs hosted the Dolphins in the AFC wild card round, Swift wore a puffer jacket custom-made by Kristin Juszczyk. Juszczyk is a self-taught talent who has gained popularity for transforming traditional sports apparel into fashionable, tailored pieces. She's also married to San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk. On the heels of Swift donning her design Juszczyk secured a licensing agreement with the NFL, allowing her to officially incorporate NFL logos into her pieces. Another example of the Swift Effect: Juszczyk saw a 250% increase in Instagram followers after Swift wore the jacket.
Swift's style icon status directed a spotlight onto Juszczyk's innovative designs, and this licensing deal looks like the next step in significantly elevating her profile. The next time a famous fan wants to make a fashion statement in the stands, we think they'll Call Juszczyk… Maybe.
Déjà Vu: If an budding talent meets a powerful endorsement at the right time, the results can be life-changing.
In 2011, Carly Rae Jepsen released "Call Me Maybe," a single from her upcoming second album. She was four years removed from finishing 4th on Canadian Idol.
After hearing the song on a Canadian radio station, Justin Bieber tweeted
Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen is possibly the catchiest song I’ve ever heard lol
Bieber, then at the zenith of his teen pop idol fame, also appeared in a lip-sync video alongside his then-girlfriend Selena Gomez. Jepsen quickly signed with Scooter Braun's (Bieber's manager) record label, and the song went on to sell 18 million copies.
(Taylor or Justin, feel free to tell everyone about The Déjà Digest)
Fact: After “Canadian Idol”, Jepsen signed to 604 Records. 604 Records was co-founded by Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickelback.
Quote: “Music is the shorthand of E•MO•TION” - Leo Tolstoy
Okay, the quote’s right, but he probably didn’t stylize ‘emotion’ like Carly did.
Trivia Question: Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan are facing off against each other this year in the Super Bowl. It’s the 4th Super Bowl head coaching rematch in history. The first was Chuck Noll vs Tom Landry (1975 & 1979). Name one of the other two rematches.
List: Call Me Maybe Covers
The Harvard Baseball Team Cover: One of the earliest Call Me viral sensations, the Harvard Baseball team's cover featured the team members performing a choreographed routine in a moving van.
The U.S. Olympic Swim Team Cover: Ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, some swimmers released a lip-sync video while showcasing behind-the-scenes footage from their Olympic preparations and travels.
Share it Maybe: Hey, me just met you. And this is crazy. But you got cookie, so share it, maybe?
Glee: The "Glee" cast put their own spin on the song, incorporating it into the show's narrative and showcasing the talents of Lea Michele.
Jimmy Fallon & The Roots: A unique and highly praised cover featured Carly Rae Jepsen herself performing "Call Me Maybe" on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." The catch? The entire song was played using classroom instruments.
