There’s No Earthly Way of Knowing

Which Direction 1.5 Million Balloons are Blowing

Background: Picture, if you will, an event with splendiferous delight. The air abuzz with Wonka wonder. Candified creations, fizzbang fancies, a place where reality is but a canvas for the imagination.

Wait! Strike That! Reverse it!

This tale to unfold is not of sweet confections and joyous delights, but rather a curious case of expectations not quite met. It’s akin to a batch of Fizzy Lifting Drinks that refused to fizz: a peculiar concoction of promise that, upon consumption, left many feeling rather grounded.

Eager families who bought tickets to "Willy's Chocolate Experience" did not find themselves in a candy factory of dreams but in a abandoned warehouse with rudimentary decor.

Chocolate? You get nothing! (Except some lemonade and some jelly beans)

The one thing the event had in common with the magical movie factory: "so much time and so little to see.” While attendees would probably prefer to have the event wiped from their memory, the internet did its thing and memes of the event will endure as long as memes of fleeting, internet-centric stories tend to endure. The fallout from the event seems to reside in a gray area between good intentions with very poor execution and a straight forward scam.

With Wonka in mind, let's look at another whimsical event that certainly could have been dreamt up by the confectioner. Like the Glasgow Gaffe, this one wasn't quite flawless, either.

Deja Vu:

Balloonfest '86 was orchestrated by the United Way in Cleveland, Ohio, and aimed to set a world record by releasing almost 1.5 million balloons. The morning of September 27, 1986, dawned with anticipation; the Public Square became a sea of vibrant colors as the helium balloons rose into an autumn sky.

However, the splendor was short-lived. Nature had its say when a cold front brought rain and wind, causing the balloons to descend sooner and faster than expected. The consequences unfolded rapidly:

  • The Burke Lakefront Airport shutdown

  • 10-car collision on the Shoreway,

  • Balloons impacted a rescue search for missing boaters on Lake Erie

  • Ultimately, the event lost money because of cost overruns

The fest did set the Guinness Record for a balloon launch (though Guinness no longer tracks that record), but the legacy of the event seems to have worsened over time.

Fact: How do you fill 1.5 million helium balloons? The logistics involved hundreds of volunteers, mostly teenagers, in an assembly line. A giant 3-story net measuring 250 feet by 150 feet kept the balloons together as volunteers inside the box inflated and tied for hours and hours, letting each balloon rise to the holding net.

Gang aft agley,
An’lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!

List: That Didn’t Go According to Plan

  • The Pepsi Number Fever (1992): In the Philippines, Pepsi's promotional game intended to boost sales turned disastrous when a production error led to too many winners, causing riots, lawsuits, and deaths when the company could not fulfill the promised prizes.

  • Woodstock ‘99 (1999): This festival was supposed to be a revival of the iconic 1969 Woodstock festival. However, extreme heat, lack of sanitation, and violence plagued the event. Several fires were started, and the festival was eventually shut down early.

  • Project X Haren (2012): A birthday party invitation posted on Facebook accidentally became a public event, leading to thousands of people descending on the small town of Haren, Netherlands. The event turned into a riot, with significant property damage and injuries, showcasing the potential for social media to amplify events beyond control.

  • Dashcon (2014): Aimed at being a celebration for Tumblr users, Dashcon was plagued by poor planning, financial issues, and lack of content. If you ever hear about an “extra hour in the ball-pit,” this is where it came from.

  • Fyre Festival (2017): Promoted as a luxury music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, Fyre Festival became infamous for its lack of organization, inadequate accommodations, and failure to deliver on promised amenities.

  • TanaCon (2018): Organized by YouTube personality Tana Mongeau as an alternative to VidCon, TanaCon promised free entry, meet-and-greets with famous YouTubers, and more. The event was canceled on its first day due to safety concerns from overcrowding, leaving fans stranded and angry.

As far as we know, it’d be the first musical based on a immersive experience based on (but not affiliated with!) a movie based on a children’s book.

Recommended Watching: Nathan Truesdell’s short documentary Balloonfest depicts the helium-filled spectacle using archival news footage from local television stations.
